sdiWhere and when you have founded the Cult band SDI ?

In 1986 the metal Scene in germany changed. In early 1986 I’ve been in the studio with my former band „Black Jack Co“. We recorded two songs and tried to get a deal with a record company. We got the same reply everytime: „Quite nice boys, but don’t you have something faster and harder?.“ I phoned my old-time mate Ralf maunert and told him to play as fast as he could (And that was quite fast). Within one week we had offers from two different record companies and finally signed a contract with gama-records.

What was the metal scene like in the 80s in West Germany ?

There were a few bands with national and international success like „Accept“, „Scorpions“, etc. In the (if you want to tell it so…) „second league“ thare were some bands like „Grave digger“ or „Helloween“ that were also well known in germany. Most of them played the classic 80’s metal style with moderate timing, based on guitar-riffs. Speed and Trash metal just came over from america and influenced many of the german bands

How you’ve made the debut album SDI 1986 and especially the tenth song – “I wanna f..к you“ ?

We were invited to a 14-day studio session in June 1986. We recorded drums, bass and guitars, Franck Tiesing joined us in the second week for some Guitar-overdubs (Solos etc) and finally we recorded the vocals. With „I wanna fuck you“ we tried to catch the atmosphere of a bar with a jazzy background music and people talking silently. I recorded the „fucking sequence“together with a friend of ours (Biggy from Ulm).

Who proposed the name SDI ?

Nothing. The name was quite a joke. We came to it this way:

1. The „strategic defence initiative“ of the american president Ronald Reagan was discussed on every channel in 1986. Everybody had heard about SDI. Everyboady had an opinion about it.
2. We tried to create a „catchy“ name that transported the worst things you can think about. And the guy who deflorates the devil must be be a bad, bad man.„Satans defloration“ was the name.
3. When the cover of the first album was ordered, the record company asked if we mind to change it into „Satans defloration incorporated“. I suggested to make it short. So we took the name as the title of the album and changed the name of band into SDI.

What was your previous SDI’s projects ?

Before and during the SDI-period I played with „Black Jack Co“ (1979 – 1990). We had several publishings on compilations and released the single „Break out/one more night“ in 1986 at „Autark“-Records. While playing with SDI I founded „Tommy & the lucky ones“, a band that stell exists www.tommy-and-the-lucky-ones.de and www.lucky-ones.de . It was a rock’n’roll cover bandback then. Later we created and recorded own songs. In 1990 „Tommy & the lucky ones“ released the track „Fies“ on a compilation.

What kind of people are Ralf, Franck Tiesing and Rainer Rage ?

Ralf is still one of my best friends. He runs a café in my home town. He play the drums in my actual project „Ingjenöre“ www.ingjenoere.de . Franck is a successful business man. He is sales representative for „zero 88“. I see him sometimes, because he still lives in Osnabrück. Rainer Rage was a great performer, but difficult to handle. We lost contact when the band splitted up in 1991.

Did you perform the SDI’s songs from 1992 till now ?

We did some gigs in 1993 with Christoph Olbrich on drums and Jürgen Uthleb on guitar. They can both be heard on the unreleased 4th album. These songs appear as bonus tracks on the re-released CDs by „Battle Cry Records“. We coudn’t get a deal for the 4th LP and that’s it.

Why the intro of the song “Fight” is in Turkish ?

I asked my close friend Bülent, who is the singer of the Ingjenöre, to create the atmosphere of turkish radio news. You might know that many turkish people live in germany. That causes trouble, sometimes. And trouble is what the song „fight“ was all about

Have you the idea of the Reunion of SDI ?

No

Why S.D.I. split after the “Mistreated” album ?

Ralf left the band in 1990 for monetary reasons. He got a well donated job in the food industry, we’re still friends. And – as I said – we had a difficult time with Rainer who couldn’t deal with our new drummer Christoph (who still works with me with the „Lucky ones“ (s.a.) and „Juicy fruits“ www.juicy-fruits.de. After a last concert-tour in czechoslovakia in january 1991 we decided to end the story. Lated we tried to get the band started again. But the time for metal-music like ours was over in the early 1990’s, so we were not successful.

And after the Sold-out reissues with Battle Cry – Have you an idea for Another SDI album

No

Where and When was the biggest and the best live performance of SDI ?

To me the biggest thing was our european tour in 1990. We’ve been to hungary, austria, netherlands, belgium, italy and czechoslovakia and of course germany. The biggest gig was in 1990 in the sold-out petöfi-hall in budapest. That was great fun.

Reinhard, do you have favorite bands, or bass (guitar) players, or favorite albums ?

Nowadays I like diffents styles. I’m not only interested in metal music. There is a large number of musicians I like very much. Last year I happened to see „the police“ in hamburg and I was very impressed by sting.

What kind of band is “Die Ingjenore” ?

It’s a kind of „fun-thing“. We are four musicians with great experience that just wanted to play the music they like. Funny german lyrics, guitar-based rock music. You can hear an example on our website www.ingjenoere.de .

Who made the cover artworks for the three albums ?

The guy who made the first cover is still hunted by me. It is pure shit, I still hate it. After this experience we decided to take the artwork in our own hands. We worked together with an old-time compagnon Manfred Pollert www.pollert.de.

What kind of books and films do you like ?

I like historic novels very much. Especially stories taking place on the background of ancient rome.

With songs like “Bloodsucker” – are you passioned with the vampire’s things ?

No, and I’m sure that „Bloodsucker“ is definitly not the best song I’ve ever made

Reinhard, with 30 songs and only 3 albums , you know, you’ve made a music Revolution in the 80’s in Bulgaria !!! The speed metal was almost forbid in those days ! Did you have problems in the Western World – with the lyrics or the songs in the 80s

We had some problems with people that didn’t read the lyrics. For instance: As you know, germany has got a very bad nazi-history in the 20’s century. The song „panic in Wehrmacht“ dealt with the lost battle of stalingrad where the german soldiers had to stay on the battlefield though the battle was already lost. They were betrayed by the goverment and the military leaders. Only the mentioning of the word „wehrmacht“ was the reason for some people to put us in a „nazi-corner“ although the song was against the nazis. Same thing happened with the album title. Only the word „Satan“ was the reason why we could get only very few gigs in public buildings.

That’s the place you can tell something special to the readers of Metal Hangar 18 and to THE HUGE fan mass of SDI here in Bulgaria !

I like to send greetings to all the metal fans in bulgaria. I’m very touched that you still enjoy our work we did back then. Thank you very much.
