As expected, the tonight’s gig of E-FORCE was under the line “connoisseurs only”. It’s a pity that they came out to be no more than 50 fans or so. But considering the upcoming gigs (02.06 in Varna and 03.06 in Pleven) it is no surprise, not to mention the so many people that went to see VOIVOD last year in Kavarna (for which Eric Forrest is mainly known).
The concert itself started on time as planned. Axecutor were forging the iron already with a huge dose of old time trash. With a mix of covers and author songs they managed to move the audience a bit and make them form a few circle pits. Once feeling welcomed they managed to unify them a bit by a few jokes as well. Nema Labavo came out after, with a great deal of concerts behind their backs, showing they were the right band to continue thereafter. They picked up a few songs out of their upcoming EP and started sweeping away the first lines of rocking metal fans. The interesting and diverse songs were sounding promising enough.
In the meanwhile Eric Forrest was sitting on the merchandise table, happy to greet anyone that came by and said “Cheers!”. I took advantage of the situation as well and got myself a T-shirt as well.
So, finally, the time I was waiting for came upon me when I met Eric Forrest. While he was mixing tracks from his two albums with the Canadians VOIVOD and some from the albums he has with his own band, we were literally swept in front from his trident. And it was really nice to see that he was not occupying the stage for himself, but he was often going back in order to give the other two band members some space – Krof and Jerome Point . BUT… when it was time for vocals and smashing bass lines, Eric Forrest was taking a position in which not even an atom bomb could alter his old battered bass and his aggressive pose – growling in the microphone. The sound quality wasn’t the best there could be, but considering the technical problems with Eric’s bass guitar and the other guitars, as well as the cutting-off of the last song “Insect”, we’ve got to be glad. Never the less, every time I listen to his performances I get these apocalyptic visions, in which half-corroded alien machines are ending it all for the human race. Too bad, by a clubs tradition, we weren’t able to call them back for a last song and it all ended at 22:00 o’clock. However, this and the really small audience did not embitter the bands mood, even Eric said : Fuck it – is just a song, but it’s all about rock’n’roll? And of course there was no problem taking a picture with him or buying a shirt or getting your ticket signed.
The thing that really determined the concert for me was the moment after the pictures I took with the other two members of the band, in which I tried to be “modern” and “new age” by telling them that I will add them as friends on Facebook in order to share the pictures with them. And they just said: „Ooo, great!!! But we are now real friends, right?!“.
Unfortunately, because of their busy schedule and the huge overstrain, we weren’t able to take an interview with Eric, but hopefully we will accomplish this goal for Metal Hangar 18 in one of the next two cities. Visit their gigs in Varna and Pleven!
