Интервю с Martin Schirenc – SCHIRENC PLAYS PUNGENT STENCH
Regarding the upcoming concert of the cult band SCHIRENC PLAYS PUNGENT STENCH on 11th of September, for which we were further informed that it will certainly happen, we prepared an interview with Martin Schirenc. Read the interview to understand how he sees modern metal scene, what he has prepared for the fans, which will be on September 11 at Metal Factory and other details about his personal preferences.
On a concert in Bulgaria again. What are your memories from your previous visits to us?
Friendly people with a good sense of humor and I’m very much looking forward to meet some old friends, that I’ve made there over the years!
What have you prepared for this upcoming concert in front of the Bulgarian fans?
We will play our first full length album – „For God Your Soul…For Me Your Flesh“ – in its entirety and some other songs from the 80’s and early 90’s.
Is there something new included, or you will rely on the old and cult classics of Pungent Stench?
Just material form the original line up phase, which lasted from 1988 to 1994. That’s what the fans want to hear and that’s what they’re getting!
Pungent Stench is one of the cult, underground bands of the 90s. For God Your Soul… For Me Your Flesh, 1990 and Been Caught Buttering from 1991 sound so heavy and authentic. What was your main source of inspiration at these times?
Well, we grew up with rock and punk music from the 70’s and early 80’s, so that was our background. But if you ask me about specific bands, I’d have to say Venom, Celtic Frost and Repulsion. We took that formula and made our own version of it.
How do you see the modern death metal scene 30 years later?
To be honest, I don’t pay much attention to contemporary music and therefore can’t say much about today’s death metal scene. We often do play with younger bands and some of them are very ‘orthodox’, meaning they sound and look like us veterans, when we were their age.
On the one hand, that isn’t very innovative, but on the other hand, it shows that death metal has become a musical genre that’s here to stay. And I’m proud to be one of the pioneers and originators of it!
Then there’s a more modern approach, as well, but it often lacks the dirt and punk of the old days and replaces it with technicality and speed. That’s not my cup of tea, unfortunately.
Is there real underground right now, or everything has been engulfed by ‘the market’ and the same market dictates the tendencies?
Oh, there’s plenty of underground bands, who do it all by themselves and don’t have a record label behind them.
You have to acknowledge that only very few bands sell almost all the records, while the majority sells the rest. That’s a law of nature, though, and can be observed in every other aspect of life, too.
It’s called the Pareto Principle, or the 80/20 Rule and the market has to follow it, too. Therefore, Metallica and the Stones are king and everything else is the underground!
During the times when you started Pungent Stench in Europe there weren’t many bands in this genre, which could inspire you so that you can start writing this music.
That’s because the genre was still new, and Europe is always a little behind the US and the UK. We took our inspiration from there and made our own version of it.
With ‘Dirty Rhymes and Psychotronic Beats’ from 1993 you initiated a new sound and covers such as ‘Why Can the Bodies Fly’ (Warning cover) were very well accepted. Do you still get inspired by bands outside of the metal scene?
All the time, because I had and still have a very diverse music taste! For example, when you listen to „Shrunken And Mummified Bitch“, there’s one riff in the beginning that has a 5/4 time signature, which was inspired by Dave Brubeck’s hit „Take Five“.
Covering „Why Can The Bodies Fly“ was a nod to German new wave and electronic music such as Kraftwerk or Der Plan and the opening parts for „For God Your Soul…“ and „Extreme Deformity“ are inspired by early Swans albums.
In your early years you had one of the most brutal metal covers of your CDs. What is the idea which stands behind them?
The covers had to match the music and should reflect our personal taste, as well. They were a big part of our image and drew the attention of many people to our music.
I remember a Kerrang interview with Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, where he was asked which album he wouldn’t show to his mother. His answer was „Been Caught Buttering“ by Pungent Stench, ha-ha!
What would you advise the teenagers that are currently starting to listen to Pungent Stench?
Embrace the stench because personal hygiene is overrated!
Which were the bands that made you feel good while touring together during the years?
I got along with all the bands we toured with, but the closest friendship I have with the guys from Brutal Truth, who I love dearly!
What are your hobbies other than music?
I like building stuff. And cockfighting, but don’t worry – there are no animals involved in this!
The most brutal lyrics you ever wrote.
Hm, maybe the songs that deal with infanticide, such as „Diary Of A Nurse“? People seem to have issues with violence against children, for some reason.
Would you write a metal ballad, continuing the lyrics „Ashes to ashes, dust to dust What a big waste for a body like yours…“ .
„For God Your Soul…“ is a ballad and love song! It’s our „Let’s Get It On“ if you will and many babies have been made, while listening to it!
For what amount of money would you agree for Lady Gaga to make a cover of the early classics of Pungent Stench?
I’d pay her $5.000,- to cover the song „Pungent Stench“, because it would make me rich and end her career, at the same time!
Without causing resentment – what is the current status of Pungent Stench?
Pungent Stench is dead, long live Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench!
If you get the chance to create a death metal super group, which are the members you would invite?
Scott Carlson – bass and vocals, Matt Olive – guitar, and Dave ‘Grave’ Hollingshead – drums.
Who are in real life „Masters of Moral – Servants of Sin“?
Hollywood scumbags who fly to climate summits in their private jets, just to blame the rest of us for ruining the planet with our CO2 emissions.
Politicians, who make us wear face diapers and stay at home, while they party with 500+ unmasked people. Shitstains that fight for racial justice by discriminating against another race.
The technocratic overlords who love diversity, as long as it’s not diversity of ideas. In other words – The Woke Left!
Would you write a song for ‘Eurovision’?
Sure, I’d do anything to mock and ridicule this intersectional clusterfuck!
Name some of the Bulgarian bands which impressed you.
Unfortunately, I’m not very familiar with the Bulgarian metal scene, but I did like Corpse and Concrete, when we played with them.
Would you like to say something as a conclusion to the Bulgarian fans?
We’re excited to play in Sofia and party with our Bulgarian fans, very soon! Until then, keep your heads up and be kind!
